How to Switch Your Cat to Tofu Litter (A 5-Step Guide)
Cats are creatures of habit. Introducing a new litter can be met with... resistance. But a slow, steady approach can make the switch to tofu litter a success. Here's how.
Step 1: The Slow Introduction (Days 1-3)
Don't go cold turkey. Add a small layer of new tofu litter (about 10-20%) on top of the old clay litter. Let your cat mix it in naturally. The goal is just to introduce the new scent and texture.
Step 2: Increase the Ratio (Days 4-6)
If your cat is using the box normally, it's time to up the ante. Aim for a 50/50 mix of tofu and clay litter. At this stage, your cat should be comfortable with the new pellets.
Step 3: Mostly Tofu (Days 7-9)
Now, go for about 80% tofu litter with just a small sprinkle of the old clay litter on top. This is the final test. If your cat continues without issue, you're ready for the final step.
Step 4: Full Transition & A Clean Box (Day 10)
Empty the litter box completely. Wash it with soap and water, dry it thoroughly, and fill it with 100% fresh tofu litter. A completely clean environment prevents any lingering old smells from confusing your cat.
Step 5: Praise and Positive Reinforcement
When you see your cat successfully using the new litter, offer praise, a gentle pet, or a small treat afterward. Positive association goes a long way!
Troubleshooting: What if my cat refuses?
If at any stage your cat stops using the box, go back to the previous step for a few more days. Patience is key. Never punish a cat for an accident outside the box during a transition.
